At CEFR level A2, you learn the Pronominaladverbien: the wo(r)- family for questions (worauf, womit, worüber) and the da(r)- family for references (darauf, damit, darüber). They replace Präposition + Sache with verbs that take a prepositional object such as warten auf, denken an, sprechen über.
A Pronominaladverb is one word made from da(r)- or wo(r)- plus a Präposition. It replaces Präposition + das/es/ihn/sie, but only when you talk about a thing (a Sache), not a person.
The wo(r)- form asks the question, the da(r)- form answers or refers back. The extra -r- appears only before prepositions that start with a vowel.

Vowel-start prepositions (an, auf, über, um) take the extra -r-. Consonant-start prepositions (mit, von, für, nach) don't.
A Pronominaladverb is a single word that replaces Präposition + das/es/ihn/sie when you refer to a thing (not a person). Instead of Ich warte auf den Bus → auf ihn, you say Ich warte darauf. For questions about things, use the wo(r)- form: Worauf wartest du?
Insert -r- when the preposition starts with a vowel: a, au, ü, u, i → woran, worauf, worüber, worum, worin and daran, darauf, darüber, darum, darin. No -r- before a consonant: womit, wovon, wofür, wonach, wobei and damit, davon, dafür, danach, dabei.
Pronominaladverbien work only for things. For people, you must use Präposition + Pronomen (or wen/wem in questions). Ich warte darauf = on the thing (the bus, the answer). Ich warte auf ihn = on the person (my brother). Likewise: Womit schreibst du? (thing) vs. Mit wem sprichst du? (person).
